Abstract

Visual research methods using participant-generated photographs are a innovative approach to qualitative research relying on its potential to enrich the data, facilitate the verbalization of certain events, engage and empower the participants by placing them as active and fundamental subjects on the construction of knowledge. However, working with images as data requests researchers to rethink technical and ethical questions about its interpretation, representation and display. Considering it, this research project is based on the possibility of discussion and knowledge development, regarding four main topics: visual methods using participant-generated photographs, data analysis approaches, dissemination and ethical implications. The aims include: (1) to accomplish participant pictures data analysis and create a dissemination plan to report research findings under the supervision of Professor Susan Cox; (2) to do collaborative research with her and laboratory colleagues; (3) increase personal knowledge about new techniques of visual data collection, analysis and dissemination by participating in a visual-arts workshop offered by Professor Cox at University of British Columbia as well as participating in supervision and research group meetings with her and her laboratory colleagues.
