Abstract

We recently demonstrated that sera from lean calorically-restricted rats can protect beta cells, increasing glucose-sensitive insulin release under both normal culture conditions and glucolipotoxicity. The identification of molecular factors in the sera from lean animals that mediate this protective effect is of interest, since this could be a new therapeutic approach in the treatment of type II diabetes, and is the central aim of this post-doctoral fellowship.
