Abstract

This project aims to investigate the tensions and confluences that emerge in the seek of prestige undertake by the São Paulo's city restaurants in the social media era. In view of the increasing habit of sharing photos of meals on social medias, it is intended to examine to what extent the incentive to use (or deny) these digital tools serves as a strategy of distinction in the gastronomic circuit. It is intended to carry out qualitative research in two groups of restaurants selected by the good qualification according to specialized critics or by the high number of "likes" in their pages in the social medias. It will be investigate: i) the categories used by each restaurant in the dispute for the popular recognition in detriment of the recognition of the specialized critic, and vice versa, or in the compatibilization of the two poles, when it is the case; ii) the narratives mobilized by those who identify with one side to disqualify the other; iii) the symbolic resources and markers of distinction present in the establishments; and iv) how these choices are reflected in the physical structure (decoration, presentation of dishes, menus etc.) and in the type of advertising of each restaurant.
