Abstract

In this project we carried out a novel methodology of synthesis of platinum-based nanoparticles with controlled morphology. The preparation involves successive steps of leaching and re-deposition of a supported "starting material", transforming the shape of the naturally-formed platinum nanoparticles into preferentially nanocubes. Halide ions are used to leach and control the shape of the synthesized structure. The surface of the materials obtained as well as their evolution throughout the synthesis process will be evaluated by physical and electrochemical characterization techniques. The prepared materials will be applied as catalysts for reactions of interest. With the success of this project, it is expected not only to understand the fundamental concepts behind the mechanisms involved in this synthesis but also to earn the necessary knowledge to create catalytic systems with finely shaped materials, displaying improved performances in catalysis and electrocatalysis.
