Abstract

The study of topological systems have been of great interest to the condensed matter and quantum information communities. The main goal of this project is to introduce the student to this area of current research and to the use of modern numerical techniques. In particular, in this project, the student will learn the surface code and the Multi-scaled Entanglement Renormalization Anstaz (MERA), thus having as a goal to study the quantum phase transition that happens in this model when the local gauge symmetry is broken. After studying this phase transition, the student will apply his new numerical tools to original problems.
