Abstract

Stroke is characterized by a blood flow blockage to the brain, resulting in neurological losses as motor and/or sensitive deficits. Ischemic stroke (IS) is the most prevalent stroke type and can be classified into 5 subtypes according to the TOAST classification. Atherosclerosis of large vessels is mainly caused by obstruction of large arteries due to thrombi formation derived from atherosclerotic plaques, characterizing one of the most frequent subtypes of IS worldwide. During ischemic evolution occurs the activation of several molecular mechanisms such as inflammation, excitotoxicity and cell death. Those processes and tissue recoveries can define IS stages: acute, subacute and chronic. The present study aims to determine the metabolic profile of plasma samples from patients with acute and chronic large vessels IS. This will identify metabolites that can be used as biomarkers for IS prognostic. In addition, we will search for possible correlations among the metabolic profile of acute patients and therapeutic interventions response and recovery. For this study, we will use Nuclear Magnetic Resonance with hydrogen analysis to evaluate the metabolites smaller than 1.5 kDa present in each stage of the disease.
