Abstract Cecal Ligation and Puncture (CLP) is an experimental model of polymicrobial sepsis that resembles its typical clinical situation. The systemic response to this multifactorial condition results in a complex interaction between the host and the infectious agents that is connected to alterations in several phisiologycal parameters, including thermoregulation. Sepsis induces the production of inflammatory mediators, which cause the increase in inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) synthesis culminating in the increase of nitric oxide (NO) plasma concentration. It may participate of the changes in body temperature in response to the worsening of sepsis condition. It has been observed that in experimental animals the administration of nitric oxide inhibitors may cause an increase in body temperature. Although NO production seems to have a role in thermoregulation, the role of its excessive production during sepsis still haven't been clarified. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the relation between the NO plasma level and body temperature in animals undergoing septic shock. It will be used two groups of animals, a CLP and a SHAM group (animals that will undergo a similar surgery, but without ligation and puncture of the cecus). The analyzed parameters will be the body temperature, NO plasma concentration and the survival rate. | |
