Abstract

Recently, hybrid nanoparticles composed of noble metals and superparamagnetic nanoparticles have attracted the attention of the scientific community due to the versatility of nanomaterials with different characteristics and functions in a single nanostructure. The combination of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) leads to hybrid Fe3O4@Ag NPs with both superparamagnetic and antibacterial properties, suitable for biomedical applications, such as targeted antimicrobial and antitumoral treatment and controlled drug transport. These nanoparticles can be easily guided to the target site of application by applying an external magnetic field. In addition, the surface functionalization of Fe3O4@Ag NPs with chitosan (CS) may improve the antibacterial activity of the nanoparticles, as well as increasing their biocompatibility and dispersion in aqueous media. The surface coating of Fe3O4@Ag NPs with CS allows the incorporation of nitric oxide (NO), recognized for important biomedical roles including antibacterial action. However, the nanoparticle interactions with biomolecules in biological fluids, in particular hybrid nanoparticles, are still a matter of investigation. In biomedical applications, nanoparticles can be administrated, for example, via dermal, ingestion, or via injection routes. Nanoparticles can reach the circulatory system. In this sense, blood compatibility is an important parameter that must be evaluated in the preclinical phase of nanoparticle administration. In this project, the hemocompatibility of hybrid Fe3O4@Ag NPs, as well NO-releasing Fe3O4@Ag NPs, will be studied in order to verify the safety of these nanoparticles. (AU)
