Abstract

Introduction: Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is an indirect method for evaluation of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) functioning. Analysis of HRV data in time and frequency domains is not sufficient to characterize the complex dynamics of heart beats since the mechanisms involved in cardiovascular regulation interact in a non-linear way. Nonlinear methods are clinically relevant for a better interpretation of HRV behavior under various conditions. Consequently, its prognostic value will complement the information obtained by the traditional analyzes. Objectives: To establish specific reference values for non-linear indexes of HRV in health status and in various disease conditions. Methods: Two sets of data will be used: 1) values of weighted mean and standard deviation, and/or median, minimum-maximum and interquartile range of HRV indexes extracted from the available international literature available; 2) values obtained from the analysis of the internal database, through theses and dissertations of members and/or collaborators of our research group. Linear (in the time and frequency domains) and nonlinear indexes (domain of chaos/complexity) will be considered. Expectation: We expect to build an extensive information bank (more than 50 thousand data) related to non-linear HRV analysis, contributing to fill a gap still existing in the specific literature.
