Abstract

This project aims to investigate the exchange of ideas about art, race and ethnicity between Salvador and New York during the implementation of a local modern art market in Salvador. To this end, I will excrutinate documents concerning to the experiences of several agents in transit and develop a bibliographic research on works about race relations in Bahia and on art and race relations, produced over the last decade. At Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, National Anthropological Archives (National Museum of Natural History) and Haward University Paper Division, I will look for photographies and written descriptions of black material culture from Salvador, made by the anthopologists Ruth Landes, Melville J. and Frances S. Herskovits and the sociologist E. Franklyn Frazier, during their field works in Salvador. I will investigate the debates on art, race and ethnicity with which the museologist José Valladares had contact during his one-year stay in New York. I´ll do so, by developing document analysis on his records at Rockefeller Archive Center, the institution that sponsored his stay; his academic records at New York University Archives; his work records at Brooklyn Museum Archives; and the catalogues of the exhibitions that took place at the city visited by him. I will also investigate the documents concerning to the two passages of MoMA's head curator René d'Harnoncourt in Brazil in his documents at MoMA Archives and National Archives of Art, relating them with his ideas and practices on art, race and ethnicity. I'll put into relation all the data collected with the bibliographic research that I will develop at the libraries of NYU, Columbia University and NYPL. (AU)
