Abstract

Surface treatments, development of new alloys and functionalization of implant surfaces with bioactive elements have been the objective of recent studies in the area of implant dentistry aiming to contribute to the process of osseointegration. The functionalization of the titanium surface with strontium can be performed by different methods. The purpose of this study is to compare, in vitro, disks of titanium-15-molybdenum alloy submitted to two different strontium (Sr) application processes: 1) the magnetron co-sputtering method used by the Aarhus University study group and 2) the hydrothermal method used by the FOAr-Unesp group. The surfaces will be evaluated for topography by scanning electron microscopy tests, chemical composition through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy tests and Sr release profiles will be investigated by wash-out experiments. In addition, the response of Periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs) to these surfaces will be evaluated by observing cell morphology, adhesion, proliferation and cytotoxicity. These results are expected to determine benefits and possible applications of this new surface treatment in Implantology. (AU)
