Abstract

This work proposes a comparison between the reception of theatrical spectacles from the criticisms of Sábato Magaldi - published in the Jornal da Tarde - and of João Apolinário - published in the Última Hora - between the years 1966 and 1971. The period covers the years prior to the decree of AI-5, which radicalized the military dictatorship in Brazil, and the consolidation of modern Brazilian theater. For this, the books that gather the reviews of the two critics published in that period will be taken as the basic bibliography: Amor ao Teatro: Sábato Magaldi, organized by Edla van Steen (São Paulo, Edições Sesc São Paulo, 2014), and A Crítica de João Apolinário: memória do teatro paulista de 1964 a 1971, volumes 1 and 2, organized by Maria Luiza Teixeira Vasconcelos (São Paulo, Imagens, 2013). In addition to this basic material, A análise dos espetáculos by Patrice Pavis (São Paulo, Perspectiva, 2003) and Para ler o teatro by Anne Ubersfield (São Paulo, Perspectiva, 2005) will be consulted to establish an international reference in the critical analysis of spectacles. There will also be an effort to review the respective worldviews of Sábato Magaldi and João Apolinário, their influences and the constitution of their critical thoughts, through which the comparative analysis will be carried out, taking as a background the socio-cultural contextualization of the period and established models of critical analysis and production. At the end, it is expected to elaborate an essay synthesis of the material investigated.
