Abstract

The Waterproofing Data research project investigates flood risk governance, focusing on the social and cultural aspects of data practices. The project aims to develop three research methods related to data practices related to flooding, in different contexts and scales, which aim to: 1) give visibility to current flows of flood data by tracking and mapping data in centers of expertise; 2) generate new types of data at the local level engaging citizens by creating multi-modal interfaces, which will have sensors, collect, and communicate knowledge and data on floods; and 3) integrating data generated by citizens with other data using geocomputational techniques. These methodological interventions will change how flood data is produced and flow, and can create new governance arrangements between citizens and governments and flood specialists and thereby improve the community's resilience to floods.
