Abstract

The phylum Cnidaria is composed of animals that have great relevance in the maintenance of aquatic ecosystems. One of the groups that integrate this phylum is the subclass Ceriantharia, represented by members generally known as cerianthids or tube-dwelling anemones. Although the phylum presents several studies related to the ecological processes of the food network, however the knowledge about these processes in cerianthids is nonexistent. As the subclass has some particularities in relation to the other phylum members, the results obtained in these previous studies may not correspond to those presented by these animals. In this way, the present study is focused to identify parameters never before observed on the feeding behavior of the genera Arachnanthus and Isarachnanthus in Okinawa (Japan) coast. This project will be based on the understand of the prey capture in the natural environment and the characterization of the main classes of animals that compose the diet of these species. In fact, the realization of this approach with specimens located in Okinawa (Japan) will be able to show a more comprehensive scenario of the feeding performance of the family Arachnactidae. (AU)
