Study of the strength and the activation of hip muscles in early degrees of hip osteoarthritis

Abstract

Osteoarthritis is a chronic and multifactorial disease that affects the joint cartilage. Regarding hip OA (OAQ), muscles weakness around the joint may be present, especially in the abductor muscles. This weakness can be considered a consequence of the reduction of muscle size and a possible deficit in muscular electrical activity. Thus, it is suggested that subjects with OAQ present, besides deficits of strength of the abductor muscles of the hip, deficits of activation of this musculature. However, some studies with advanced hip OA have found an increase in the activation of this musculature. This study, therefore, aims to evaluate the strength and activation of the hip abductor muscles of subjects with OAQ in the initial degrees. Women an men (aged between 40 and 65 years) will be divided into 2 groups: Group OAQ: subjects with initial degrees of OAQ (grades II and III) and control group: healthy subjects. These participants will be initially evaluated. Isokinetic evaluation of hip abductor/adductor torque, concentric and eccentric (30 degrees/sec) will be performed simultaneously with medial and maximum gluteal muscles electromyography activity evaluation, using the Trigno " Wireless electromyography (Delsys Inc., Boston, MA). For all analyzes, the significance level of 5% (±d0.05) will be used.
