Abstract Infant visual assessment in a clinical context is usually performed through the Preferential Looking (PL) technique, in which a trained observer records eye fixations to stimuli varying in some property of interest such as contrast or spatial frequency. Despite the popularity of the technique, it presents some limitations, such as the impossibility of the observer being blind to the condition tested, the variability between exams performed by different observers and the lack of precise control over stimuli parameters. We propose to overcome those limitations through a novel procedure called Automated Preferential Looking (APL) in which the presentation of test stimuli (interleaved with short animated clips to keep the child engaged) and the fixation recording are performed via software that relies only on widely-available hardware components, with the aim to facilitate technology transfer to the ophthalmological and orthoptic clinic. The main objective of the proposal is to determine the adequacy of the methodology: the measurement of Visual Acuity (VA). Healthy children with age between 3 and 24 months (n=92) will have their VA assessed by the APL procedure and by the classical Teller Acuity Card (TAC) procedure. The adequacy of the procedure will be evaluated by the compatibility between the measurements of both methods, and also by the reproducibility of the exam on two different sessions. The present work paves the way for a new clinical assessment instrument on the area of paediatric ophthalmology, with applicability not only relevant to the current procedure, but also to the assessment of other aspects of visual function (such as contrast and color discrimination) or to the assessment of ocular movement.
