The discharge of sludge from water treatment plants (WTPs) in water bodies is still a common practice in Brazil. Other usual destination alternatives are to dispose of the water treatment sludge (WTS) in municipal solid waste or industrial landfills, or to send the WTS to sewage treatment plants. However, increasingly stringent environmental standards have led to the search for more sustainable disposal solutions. A promising option is the use of sludge mixed with natural soils in geotechnical works, such as bottom liners and final covers of sanitary and industrial landfills, bases and sub-bases of pavements, backfill of containment structures and trenches, and landfills in general This research project proposes to study the geotechnical behavior of mixtures of Botucatu clayey sand with Taiaçupeba WTS in three soil:sludge proportions (3:1, 4:1 and 5:1 by wet mass). The chemical, mineralogical and geotechnical characterization of the soil, the sludge and the mixtures will be carried out and the engineering properties of compacted samples of the soil and the mixtures will be investigated, namely: deformability, permeability and shear strength. Finally, possible geotechnical applications for the mixtures will be investigated.
