Abstract

Evaluation of oxygen uptake (VO2) is considered the gold standard for determining the exercise capacity. However, this method requires expensive equipment and specialized technical team, which often is not available in clinical practice. In this context, it would be helpful to estimate the VO2 from a field test that is of easy implementation for evaluating patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Objective: To validate the prediction equation of oxygen consumption obtained from the modified incremental step test in patients with COPD. Method: A cross-sectional study in which will be included 50 patients with COPD. Patients undergo spirometry, incremental cycle ergometer test, modified incremental step test incremental modified (TDIM) and will answer the modified Medical Research Council dyspnea scale (MRCm) and St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ). Oxygen uptake estimated by the prediction equation will be compared to VO2 obtained from the modified incremental step test (gas exchange measure). Expected results: validation of a predictive equation of oxygen consumption during the modified incremental step test will complete the evaluation of the exercise capacity of patients with COPD in clinical practice.
