Abstract

The recent implementation of racial hetero identification commissions by public universities in their undergraduate admissions processes has changed the way in which students are judged as having or not the right to apply for racial affirmative action, hitherto largely based on self-declaration. Based on the analysis of documents, debates in the press, interviews with activists, members of committees and students, and observation of the functioning of a selected set of commissions, this research aims to investigate how racial hetero identification have been implemented and their effects on the people who participate and on those who are submitted to them. With this, it intends to contribute to the debate on race relations in Brazil.
