Cultural heritage at the university: Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous heritages in curriculum production

Abstract

Affirmative action policies, which enabled a significant increase in the number of black, brown and indigenous students in higher education, and changes in educational legislation that made the teaching of African, Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous History and Culture mandatory, caused significant changes in the Higher education institutions. In this context, the debate on cultural and ethnic-racial diversity and differences has emerged in Brazilian universities in the last two decades. Based on the performance of new social actors in the production of the university curriculum, the general objective of this research is to understand how the notions of heritage are produced and discursively activated, which emerge in the educational processes developed by Afro-Brazilian and indigenous cultural centers based in public universities. Thus, it is assumed that the discourses on Afro-Brazilian and indigenous cultural practices developed on university campuses have strained the meanings of academic training and the university curriculum in some areas of knowledge. For this analysis, four collectives present on the campuses of USP, UNESP and UNICAMP that develop extension activities were selected. The methodology used will be of a qualitative nature, using the techniques of ethnography, document analysis and bibliographic review.
