Abstract

The clinker substitution by Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) reduces the CO2 footprint of cement in its production, this is the main strategy to reduce the environmental impacts attributed to the cement industry. However, cement is only the raw material, and it is essential to evaluate the environmental impact of the final products (mortar, concrete, precast, etc.) and to associate these impacts to their performance. Currently the cements are classified as to their compressive strength through a fixed methodology (water/cement ratio 0.48) that does not take into account the characteristics of the material and consequently its efficiency in use. The efficiency of the binder in its use will depend on two main parameters, chemical reactivity and water demand, both were related in the combined water fraction indicator (cwf). The substitution of the clinker by SCMs will influence the chemical reactivity and water demand of the composite cement and consequently the performance of the final product as to the rheological behavior, mechanical properties and environmental impact. In this context, the objective of this work is to develop and optimize a methodology to evaluate the eco-efficiency of cements that consider water demand and chemical reactivity, facilitating the development of cementitious materials with low environmental impact.
