Abstract

The binding energy for tightly bound "regular" nuclei is approximately 7.5 MeV / nucleon. On the other hand, the energies required to breakup the so-called weakly bound nuclei are well below this value. Because of this property, reactions involving weakly bound nuclei are very complex and interesting. The breakup channel affects all other reaction channels and provides additional information about the properties of these systems. Another aspect of these nuclei is that many have cluster structure, which until now constitutes a challenge, both experimental and theoretical, in nuclear physics. The present project aims at the installation of a new data acquisition system for the realization of nuclear reactions experiments involving beams of weakly bound nuclei. The new system will be mounted at chamber 30B of the Open Laboratory of Nuclear Physics (LAFN) at IFUSP and will be composed of 250 MS/s digitizing modules, which were recently acquired from Caen. The main advantage of replacing the current analog electronics by a digital electronics is that the new system provides the instants at which the particles hit the detectors. Thus, using a fast, simple and modern electronics, it will be possible to identify the temporal coincidence of events that occur in different detectors. In recent years, we have also acquired pixelated silicon detectors, which have high granularity (256 pixels) and large area (50mm x 50mm). These detectors are ideal for the measurements proposed in this project, making it feasible to assemble an experimental arrangement with excellent geometric efficiency, greatly increasing the probability of measuring events in time coincidence. The identification of particles in coincidence with good statistics will allow to study, from the experimental point of view, important processes in the context of nuclear reactions, such as transfer of nucleons or even clusters, breakup processes, etc.
