Effect of erosive challenge on three resins composed of different monomer compositions and load content

Abstract

The objective of this study will be to evaluate the impact of the erosive challenge on the surface of three resins composed of different monomer and filler compositions (Filtek Universal Restorative, IPS Empress Direct and Admira Fusion). For this purpose, 30 specimens will be made, 10 for each composite resin, with dimensions of 6 mm height X 6 mm width X 1 mm thickness. The composite resins will be photoactivated for 20 seconds and then the surfaces will be polished with silicon carbide sandpaper and diamond paste with polishing felt cloth. A strip of 3mm wide unplasticized polyvinyl chloride tape will adhere to one side of the specimen surface, creating a control area (which will be protected from erosion challenge) and a test area (which will be eroded). The specimens will be submitted to the erosion protocol, which will be immersed in 5 mL of 0.06M HCl, pH 1.2, for 30 hours at 37ºC, and then analyzed for surface roughness, loss volume, microhardness, gloss, surface topography and elemental composition evaluation in order to evaluate the impact of the erosive challenge on their surfaces.
