Abstract

Anodizing of high strength Al-Cu-Li alloys is of great interest for the aerospace industry since it uses these alloys in the aircraft structure. This research aims to study the influence of the microstructure of the 2198-T8 and 2198-T851 Al-Cu-Li alloys on the anodized layer formed in sulfuric tartaric acid solution and the effect of this layer on the corrosion resistance of these alloys. For this purpose, microstructure characterization will be carried out by means of techniques such as: Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Scanning Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (SKPFM). The electrochemical characterization will be performed by potentiostatic and potentiodynamic polarization curves, in order to understand the different processes that occur during the anodization process of these alloys. The alloys will be anodized in sulfuric tartaric solution (TSA) and the microstructural characterization will be performed after this step. Mechanisms will be proposed related to the dissolution of the intermetallic phases during the anodizing process. Potentiodynamic curves will be used to identity the phase dissolution potentials. Also, the effect of different potentials applied on the alloy microstructure will be investigated and the potentials applied will be chosen by analysis of the potentiostatic polarization curves. The progress of this study will contribute to the development of new methods of anodizing of Al-Cu-Li alloys used for the aircraft structures. (AU)
