Abstract

"Archives and Narratives: the Balinese experience at the Colonial Exhibition of 1931" is a postdoctoral research project, which intends to access the unpublished archives of Cokorda Gede Raka Sukawati's family, in Bali, Indonesia, to gather and to analyze the remaining testimonies of these artists that went to the Exhibition. For such, it is orientated towards the following question: if the Colonial Exhibition was a mis en scène of the world organized by the imperialistic nations, which would have been the perception of the Balinese participants of this event? To answer that question, this research will be developed around two main axes. The first one is related to a fieldwork in Bali, at the archive of Cokorda Gede Raka Sukawati and with informers still alive on the island. Besides of being a member of the Ubud's royal family and an influential personality among the Dutch administration officers, Cokorda Gede Raka Sukawati was the artistic director of the group that went to Paris. The second axis that structures this research is related to the mise en scène's devices of the other assembled in the Colonial Exhibition of 1931. Therefore, we present the hypothesis that the Exhibition would have staged different elements, influenced by current ethnographic thought, with the intention of creating an "effect of authenticity" in the spectator. Finally, we intend to change the current perspective in analyzing this event, as the Balinese performances at the Colonial Exhibition of 1931 are always approached from an Eurocentric perspective.
