Abstract

Recent evidence has supported the fact that increased parasympathetic activity contributes to a better ability to communicate. In this project, we raise the following question: Can music increase parasympathetic control of heart rate and influence auditory attention levels? Objective: To verify the effects of music on central auditory processing and autonomic control of heart rate. Method: Healthy young volunteers aged 18 to 25 will be analyzed. Central auditory processing will be analyzed by long-latency auditory evoked potential (LAEP), while autonomic heart rate regulation will be assessed by heart rate variability. The volunteers will be examined on two different random days. In a day, variables will be analyzed before exposure to music and immediately after music through the headset. On another day, the same procedures will be performed, however, they will remain with the headset turned off. (AU)
