Abstract

Chronic elevation of blood pressure (BP) or hypertension (HPT) is one of the 10 leading risk factors influencing the global burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and is directly responsible for as many as 7 million deaths annually, representing one of the biggest health problems worldwide with a significant societal and economic burden. In the subgroup of vascular diseases, peripheral artery disease (PAD) is defined as lower-extremity artery disease and it is characterized by progressive atherosclerotic build-up in leg arteries. PAD has strongly association with coronary or cerebrovascular disease, its estimated to be as high as 61 % in patients with higher mortality rate. Physical exercise promotion is one of the main global goals of innumerous health and medical societies for preventing and managing HPT and consequently, PAD. However, the relationship of exercise effects in HPT and PAD in a longer-term remains unclear. Studies comparing which type of exercise promotes better response in physiological mechanisms responsible for BP reductions as well as identification of hemodynamics, vascular and autonomics benefits responses in HPT and PAD need to be enlighten. Thus, the main purpose of this internship is to perform two different studies which have potential for high-impact publications in a leader center in exercise and health sciences, under supervision of one of the most renowned scientists in the world in the field of cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation; to learn new methods, statistics analyses and measurements of data collection that will be used in current research group and master project, as well as in future projects, providing knowledge that will benefit population with cardiovascular disease and scientific literature.
