Abstract

Zinc is a cofactor in enzymatic reactions and therefore participates in several biochemical cycles of plants, including photosynthesis and sugar formation, protein synthesis, fertility and seed production, growth regulation and defense against diseases. The objective of this project is to evaluate the Zn absorption and distribution, applied through seed treatment, during the germination and development of soybean seedlings by X-ray spectroscopy, and to associate with the plant performance at phonological stage V2 (first trifoliolate leaf fully developed, or two nodes). Two soybean seed lots of a same cultivar presenting different vigor levels will be treated with the doses of 0, 2, 4, and 8 g of Zn per kg of seed, using as source micronized zinc oxide (ZnO). Control treatment will consist in untreated seeds. The absorption and distribution of this element in the seeds and seedlings will be mapped by X-ray spectroscopy. Evaluations of leaf area, plant height, root and shoot dry mass, and content and accumulation of zinc by plants will be performed at the phonological stage V2. The efficiency of Zn uptake by soybean seedlings from lower and higher seed vigor lots will be compared with plant evaluations at V2. (AU)
