Abstract

Obesity is characterized by an overgrowth of adipose tissue, which a negative impact on health and is highly present throughout the world, being capable of causing dozens of associated diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cancer. Asthma, in turn, is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways resulting in limited air passage into the lungs, being reversible spontaneously or through treatment. The coexistence between these two diseases has become increasingly common, and the inflammatory profile induced by adipose tissue is the main cause of the worsening of asthma in obese individuals throughout the world. Weight loss is currently considered the best alternative to improve the negative condition caused by obesity, however, the literature describes some studies that indicate that part of the adipose tissue originated by the weight gain remains incessant in the body. Adipose tissue is the producer of numerous inflammatory mediators that are related to asthma, generating a Th1 and Th2 immune profile. Thus, the persistent presence of adipose tissue in the body, even after considerable loss of weight, could cause a constant inflammatory state capable of prolonging and exacerbating respiratory diseases, such as asthma. Both, asthma and obesity, have their own characteristics in the male and female genders, depending on the stage of life. The relationship and causes of metabolic memory caused by obesity experienced in the past, taking into account the characteristics of gender and age, remain to this day still unknown. (AU)
