Abstract

This work aims to analyze the Greek texts read in the Colégio Pedro II during the years 1850-1951, in order to verify its importance in the culture of the time. Investigating its influence in the school culture of the period it questions the cultured culture and its paradigms. It also intends to analyze how the authors reflect in the culture and gender separation because, most of the times, woman did not have access to classic culture considered inappropriate to woman condition, destined for marriage and motherhood. The entire curriculum of this school was carefully chosen with a view to the cultured man formation, prepared for the exercise of power and private property administration. Belonging to the elite demanded, beyond material conditions, a mentality that Greek school literature helped to forge: capable of valuing strength, boldness, virility in the uncompromising defense of sovereignty?
