Abstract The dismantling of the Carolingian Empire in the late ninth century was a moment of profound political and social change. The most prominent aristocrats were no longer directly linked to the king, but began to exercise power with greater autonomy on the scale of principalities and duchies. In this new mosaic of political forces, control over religious establishments and the ability to assign ecclesiastical positions have become important strategies in legitimizing the exercise of authority. However, as historiography attests in the last three decades, the men of the Church were not subject to the lay aristocrats. In fact, they acted politically, combining spiritual and temporal power. Inserted in this broad theme that investigates the Church's relations with other social groups, this research will articulate the biographical itineraries and works of Folcuin of Lobbes (935-990) and Rather of Verona (890-974) to understand how a monk and a bishop, respectively, sought the statement on a higher social hierarchical scale. We will aim to detail their ways of exercising power, as well as their ways of relating to other individuals, in order to understand how they are rooted in 10th century society as members of an ecclesiastical elite.
