Abstract

The object of this research is the concrete manifestations of the syndicalism and rationalist education in São Paulo in the 1920s and 1930s. The question we intent to answer is if there was a relation of mutual influence between the rationalist schools and the revolutionary tendencies of syndicalism in Sao Paulo that can be considered as an expression of a pattern of diffusion and relational dynamics between these tactical and strategic components of anarchism in the decades studied. We work with the hypothesis that the relationship between syndicalism and rationalist education presented a transnational pattern that went beyond the mere influence of European immigration in Latin American countries, and spread to the direct relationship between militants, organizations, unions and newspapers from South American countries. This transnational relationship was strongly marked by the high degre of mobility of anarchist militants, motivated both by responsibility for ideological propaganda and by the persecution and repression of the state and capitalism against the political action of these subjects and their groups. A comparative analysis of the case of São Paulo in relation to some elements of the Argentine reality with respect to anarchism, syndicalism and rationalist education can be quite fertile to establish approximations and distances of these aspects in the reality of each locality, better understanding the origins and influences present in the context of São Paulo in the period analyzed.
