Abstract

Megacities are nowadays recognized as important sources of anthropogenic greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, mainly linked to the energy sector and transportation through fossil fuel consumption. São Paulo Metropolitan Area (SPMA), with 20 million inhabitants and more than 7 million vehicles fueled with gasohol, ethanol or diesel (Almeida et al., 2014), the largest city in Brazil, cannot be different. In order to help quantify the contribution of SPMA to the global burden of greenhouse gases (GHG), this project aims to estimate column averaged abundances of CO2 and CH4, the two most powerful anthropogenic greenhouse gases, using portable FTIR spectrometers as part of the Thematic project METROCLIMA-SP.
