Abstract

The physical and psychological consequences of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment are significant and prolonged. The symptoms of chemotherapy side effects may begin early in treatment, may or may not be reversible, or may persist for years. In addition to chemotherapy-specific toxicity (cardiac, hematological and neurological, for example), breast cancer treatment is associated with fatigue, weight gain, unfavorable changes in body composition and decreased bone mineral density. The physical activity emerges as a viable intervention to attenuate many of the adverse effects of cancer treatments. Unfortunately, studies indicate that even healthy women are often sedentary and have low levels of physical activity. Objectives: the objective of this study is to evaluate functional capacity, bone mineral density, body composition and quality of life in women with breast cancer according to their overall physical activity and the associations between the above variables with adherence to treatment. Subjects and Methods: This is a prevalence and cohort study. Women, without previously treatment for breast cancer will be invited. The indication of cancer treatment will be performed according to the service protocol and this project will not interfere with the clinical treatment. For the prevalence study, the calculated sample size was 90 women, 60% with overweight or obese. After signing the informed consent, the women will perform the initial assessment in which their overall physical activity at work, commuting and leisure will be measured. Their functional capacity will be evaluated through 6 minutes test (that is their ability to walk 6 minutes on a treadmill) and lift and sit test (sitting on a bench of 40cms without difficulties). Body composition, bone mineral density and quality of life will be calculated. Data will be expressed as mean ± standard deviation. The statistical significance of differences between groups will be calculated by Fisher or chi-square (Ç2) tests, while for continuous variables, Mann-Withney (two groups) or Kruskal-Wallis (more than two groups) tests will be used. P values less than 0.05 will be considered statistically significant. Analyzes will be performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 15.0 (SPSS Incorporation, Chicago, IL, USA) and R Environment for Statistical Computing. (AU)
