Abstract

Family farming plays an important role in society as the considerable importance for the country's food security, the maintenance of the population in the countryside and the preservation of sustainable practices. Despite their importance, family farmers have to deal with a number of difficulties, such as lack of investment resources and difficult access to markets. Therefore, strategies that can make them more competitive should be studied, as geographical indications (GIs). Therefore, this paper aims to verify how the technical specification guides influence the participation of family farming in the coffee GIs of the territories of Alta Mogiana and Pinhal Region, located in the state of São Paulo. In addition to bibliographic and documentary research, a study of multiple cases will be performed. Although GIs are constantly pointed out as instruments capable of facilitating market access and fostering development, different studies indicate that they are still little adopted by family farmers. Therefore, we believe that this study will help to better understand the relationship between family farmers and GIs. As a contribution to society, a reference term will be prepared with recommendations aimed at making GIs an instrument for market access. (AU)
