Abstract

In this master's project, we will investigate new approaches for the control and destruction of the undifferentiated cancer stem cell population (CSCs) in the treatment of the most aggressive subtype of breast cancer, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). TNBC expresses neither estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) hormone receptors nor shows increased expression or amplification of epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2). In the absence of these markers, there are still no well-defined markers in the clinic that enable the use of target-directed therapies in TNBC. Thus, in this study we will establish complementary strategies to the treatment of TNBC that does not exclude the use of conventional therapies but enhance their action through the negative modulation of the population of CSCs, making resistant tumours more sensitive and responsive to treatments, and preventing their recurrence.
