Abstract

The literature shows us that the best ways to maintain smoking cessation are to replace bad habits with healthy habits. In this sense, physical activity is related to a change in lifestyle and may be an important factor in helping smokers to remain abstinent and consequently active. However, although beneficial, there is still no consensus on the best intensity, frequency and duration of exercise in the smoking cessation process. Objectives: To evaluate the short-term effectiveness of two physical activity incentive programs in maintaining smoking abstinence. Methods: Low-active smokers (<7,500 steps/day) confirmed by pedometric evaluation will be included. The level of nicotine dependence and degree of motivation will be assessed by the Prochaska and Diclemente questionnaire. Monoximetry will be performed for the assessment of exhaled carbon monoxide and spirometry for pulmonary function. For the level of physical activity will be used pedometer, and for time in sedentary activities accelerometer. Will be randomized to groups: A) 10,000 steps/day (without intensity/cadence control); B) 10000 steps/day, with at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity (minimum cadence of 100 steps/min.) And control group. The intervention will last 12 weeks, when the evaluations will be redone. Statistical analysis: Data will be submitted to the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, expressed as mean and standard deviation or median and interquartile range. In the intergroup analysis will be used covariance analysis (ANCOVA) with adjustment for age, gender, pack-years and BMI from the final gain (final-initial) delta. For intra-group comparison before and after the end of the intervention, paired Student's t-test for normal data or Wilcoxon's test for non-normal data will be used. The statistical program SPSS 22.0 will be used, adopting a significance level of 5%. (AU)
