Abstract

The relationship between psychoanalysis and gender studies has been fertile since the second half of the 20th century. From the rise of the feminist theories in the 60s, the use of the expression of gender identity has been increased, becoming widely used in everyday speech in Brazil. Moreover, there are numerous academic works that seek to understand gender and sexuality through Lacanian Psychoanalysis. However, we perceive a gap between theoretical and colloquial speech. Through theoretical instruments offered by Lacanian theory, in this research project we intend to investigate this gap, so we can move forward in its description and characterization. This investigation will rely on the Lacanian conception of the subject as something that emerges from the discourse, so we can make progress in understanding the consequences and outcomes of the colloquial use of the expression gender identity for the constitution of the subject.
