Comparison of physical activity level between healthy and non-cystic bronchiectasis subjects

Abstract

The impact of bronchiectasis (BCE) on the physical activity level (PAL) ispoorly known. It is important to explore this to identify the need for PALinterventions to individuals with BCE. Objectives: to evaluate the PAL inpatients with BCE. Methods: This cross-sectional study will evaluate BCEoutpatients from Pneumology Clinic and sedentary healthy individuals, 18-60years, both sexes, in two non-consecutive days. On visit 1, anamnesis,anthopometric evaluation and lung function will be performed, and only for BCEpatients, will be followed by: Quality of Life Questionnaire-Bronchiectasis, SaintGeorge questionnaire, modified Medical Research Council and Borg scales. Atlast, all participants will be instructed to use an accelerometer for 7 consecutivedays. On visit 2, the accelerometer will be returned. The sample size wasestimated in 46 participants (23 per group). Data normality will be tested byShapiro-Wilk. Categorical data will be analyzed by qui-square test or Fischer.Data comparison (step count, sedentary time, light-lifestyle and moderate-vigorous physical activity) will be performed by t test or Mann-Whittney.Correlations between PAL and quality of life and symptoms will be performed byPearson or Spearman. The significance level will be set at 5% and all analyzeswill be done using SPSS software version 17.0 (SPSS. Inc. Chicago III).
