Abstract

In the context of research and development microgrids pilot project in University of Campinas (UNICAMP), called Microgrids for Efficient, Reliable and Greener Energy (MERGE-UNICAMP), two of the most important activities are modeling and simulation of pilots microgrids, in dynamic, steady-state and long-term operation domain. Therefore, this research project initial objective is developing dynamic models of microgrids, considering control schemes and transitory state operation of distributed resources (e.g., photovoltaic systems, energy storage systems, thermal generation systems and loads). Otherwise, the project also includes developing steady-state models that consider active and reactive power balances, losses and voltage drops, as well developing operation models at long term that evaluate economic aspects of microgrid operation, concerning energy transfer in different scenarios throughout the year operation. To each one of the three models previously presented, specialized software of modeling and simulation of microgrids will be used, i.e., Simulink® from Matlab® will be used to dynamic modeling, OpenDSS from EPRI will be used to stationary modeling and, preferably, HOMER Pro® from HOMER Energy can be used to energetic modeling. Finally, based on the results regarding the three microgids AC case studies from R&D MERGE-UNICAMP project, the second objective of this research project is proposing energy management strategies of microgrids using heuristics rules (i.e., specialized systems) that allow an efficient and robust operation of microgrids, taking account of relevant aspects of transitory, stationary and long term state operation.
