Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are frequently co-occurring neurodevelopmental disorders. Relatively little attention has been given so far to this co-occurrence due to the fact that the American Psychiatric Association considered that ADHD symptoms in individuals with ASD were a phenocopy associated with autism until the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental disorders. The network of psychopathology approach provides a different view of the relationship between psychiatric symptoms, as it enables analysis of symptoms at the individual level. Usual approaches employed in Psychiatry disregard individual qualitative differences between symptoms, as different symptoms are considered quantitatively similar. To date, there are no studies considering the co-occurrence of ASD-ADHD at the individual symptom level. In this project, we will use the network analysis methodology to characterize the network structure of ASD and ADHD traits in a population of children and adolescents from São Caetano do Sul, SP, Brazil.
