Translation, adaptation and psychometric of the children's and youth population's forms of the Adaptive Behavior Assessment System (ABAS-3) studies in Brazilian Portuguese

Abstract

One of the limitations in making the diagnosis of Intellectual Disability (ID) in children in the national context is the absence of standardized instruments for the assessment of Adaptive Functioning (AF), which is one of the diagnostic criteria along with the assessment of intelligence. AF is defined as conceptual, social and practical skills that are important for carrying out daily activities. This study aims to translate and culturally adapt the forms for children and adolescents of the Adaptive Behavior Assessment System (ABAS-3) and to verify their psychometric properties in brazilian samples of typical children and with neurodevelopmental disorders. Parents and teachers of 1320 children without neurodevelopmental disorders between 2 and 17 years old and 90 children with disorders in the same age group will participate, namely Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and and ID. The accuracy will be obtained from the Alpha Coefficient. Evidence of validity based on internal structure and relationships with external variables, such as age and indicators of behavioral problems, will be investigated. This study is a pioneer in the country, as it will provide essential tools for conducting more accurate diagnoses and studies focusing on adaptive behavior in Brazil. (AU)
