The objective of the present study will be to evaluate the influence of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) on peri-implant bone repair in implants installed in the tibiae of rats. Thirty-two male rats (Wistar) will be divided into two groups (n = 16). At day 0 the animals will receive an implant (4 mm x 2.2 mm) in the proximal metaphysis of the right and left tibia. Also, at day 0, the supplementation through gastric gauvage with either CoQ10 or vegetable glycerin will initiate, depending on experimental group. The supplementation will continue until the end of the experiment. Group SS (SHAM): the supplementation protocol will consist of daily gavage of 1 ml of vegetable glycerin. SS-CoQ10: the supplementation protocol will consist of daily gavage of 120 mg of Coenzyme Q10. Euthanasias will be performed at 7 and 28 postoperative days. The collected specimens will be submitted to histological processing without demineralization for analysis of bone/implant contact (BIC) and with demineralization for histological, histometry of newly-formed bone and immunohistochemistry (for detection of osteocalcin [OCN]). Data will be statistically analyzed (pd0.05).
