Abstract

This Scientific Initiation study aims to widely understand "The Castle of Caernarvon" painting, belonging to the collection of Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP). For this purpose, analyzes will be carried out on the form, technique and authorship of the painting, as well as a study on the context in which the work is inserted, considering the various historical narratives about landscape paintings. The investigation on authorship is a central point of the research, since the attribution of the work to William Turner is questionable. In order to do so, it is intended to carry out a deep discussion about the hypotheses about the author to, at a later stage, understand the position of the painting within a historical panorama of landscape painting, especially in the context of British Romanticism and Gothic revival. Thus, the study will be based on the academic literature on the history of art, using authors such as Kenneth Clark and Ernest H.J. Gombrich, and publications on artists William Turner and David Cox, in which John Ruskin is an important reference alongside by Andrew Wilton and Nathaniel Neal Solly.
