Abstract

Turbulence in magnetically confined plasmas is characterized by the presence of coherent structures (bursts) that propagate in a convective way, significantly affecting the particle transport. Despite its importance for plasma confinement, the process of burst formation still unclear. This project proposes to study the statistical characteristics of bursts in a magnetically confinement plasma device specially developed for turbulence studies, called Texas Helimak. The statistical and spectral properties of these data will be described using a stochastic model for the turbulence that considers the possibility that the bursts being not independently generated. This model was proposed in a recent study that revealed the existence of regions with a strong temporal correlation between adjacent bursts in some Texas Helimak discharges. The objective of this master's project is to map in detail the plasma conditions in which this occurs, in order to understand what gives rise to these correlations. (AU)
