Abstract The land use change and intensification of production systems may lead to soil Carbon (C) loss. The use of agricultural practices that contribute to the conservation and increase of soil C levels are strategic for the development of a sustainable agriculture. This project aims to evaluate the impacts of land use change on the quality and quantity of Soil Organic Matter (SOM) in areas of native vegetation converted to no-tillage and conventional planting in the MATOPIBA region, considered the last agricultural frontier in Brazil. The work will be carried out in the localities of Balsas - MA, Gurupi - TO, Baja Grande do Ribeiro - PI and Luís Eduardo Magalhães - BA. The soil will be sampled at nine points for each use up to 1 m depth. The total contents of C, Nitrogen (N) and Dissolved Organic C (DOC) will be determined through elemental analyzer. The C and N stocks will be quantified and adjusted to an equivalent soil mass. Biochemical changes in SOM will be evaluated through the techniques of pyrolysis coupled to gaseous chromatograph/mass spectrometer and laser-induced fluorescence; biochemical changes in DOC will be evaluated using spectroscopic techniques in the visible and infrared wavelength. At the end, the data will be integrated using multivariate statistics aiming a descriptive interpretation of the data. It is expected to quantify and predict the impacts generated in the SOM and DOC due to the change in land use and management, in order to improve the agricultural practices that have been used and minimize the impacts of agriculture on the dynamics of the C in the MATOPIBA region.
