Abstract

In December 2019, at Wuhan city, in China, the first case of Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) was reported, and on March 11, 2020 the World Health Organization (WHO) declared this disease a pandemic. This occurred due to its rapid spread, as a consequence of different forms of contamination, for example through respiratory droplets containing the virus (SARS-CoV-2), or by direct contact or by contaminated surfaces. By January 2021, 96,267,473 cases were confirmed of the disease in the world. With a high number of cases, and being a recent disease, there is a need for studies that contribute to assess the prognosis and evolution of the disease in patients infected with the new coronavirus. Thus, in this study, we seek to evaluate the iron dismetabolism of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, through serum profiles and gene expression aiming at the identification of new possible biomarkers of disease prediction. For this, we will use blood samples to quantify the serum profiles of iron, ferritin and hepcidin, in addition to the gene expression of the transferrin receptor of patients infected with COVID-19.
