Abstract

The project will explore the generation of Plasma Activated Liquid (PAL) for applications related to dentistry. Cold plasma is an emerging technology for non-thermal disinfection and surface modification that is free of aggressive chemicals and therefore environmentally friendly. The plasma treatment of liquids creates an acidic environment that results in changes in the redox potential, conductivity and in the formation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS). As a result, PAL has a different chemical composition and can serve as an alternative method for microbial disinfection. Given the considerable promise of technology, there is an urgent need to develop a pilot-scale PAL system that can be used to generate results with real relevance, especially in the dentistry field. This scientific initiation project will focus on the development and characterization of a PAL generation system for applications in the dentistry field. The designated fellow will work at the Plasma and Process Laboratory of the Technological Institute of Aeronautics in cooperation with the Genome Laboratory of the São José dos Campos Science and Technology Institute / UNESP alongside engineers, physicists and microbiologists, providing an excellent opportunity to acquire new knowledge and skills in a multidisciplinary environment.
