Application of silver-containing glaze at high temperature on third-generation zirconias: effects on the fatigue failure load, translucency, and masking ability

Abstract

Aiming to reach the needed translucency for use in monolithic restorations, the last generation of zirconium oxide-based ceramics went through modifications, as the increase in the content of cubic phase and stabilizers (5Y-PSZ e 4Y-PSZ). On the other hand, the so-called "translucent zirconia" restorations usually require the application of a glaze layer to reach an esthetic and natural appearance. The glaze application may lead to problems as fracture or delamination due to its weak interface with zirconia. Procedures that modify the glass composition to create a stronger covering or interface are finishing alternatives to these restorations. Moreover, it is possible to include antimicrobial agents, as silver, in the powder glaze composition. This addition may be highly beneficial since biological complications, as caries, periodontitis or peri-implantitis, are frequently reported in ceramic restorations follow-up studies. However, in vitro studies are paramount to determine if the silver-containing glass application meets the esthetic and mechanical aspects required for the clinical use of ceramic restorations. Thus, this study aims to analyze the influence of the experimental silver-containing glaze sintered at high temperature on the optical properties and fatigue behavior of third-generation zirconias (4Y-PSZ and 5Y-PSZ). Analyses of translucency, masking ability, and fatigue failure load will be performed comparing the use of the silver-containing glaze and a conventional glaze on the occlusal surface. In addition, the long-term microbial activity will be analyzed to observe the silver effectiveness. Complementary analyses of failure mode, roughness, and energy dispersive spectroscopy will also be performed. (AU)
