Influence of the surface treatment on the resistance of composite resin repairs: systematic review

Abstract

With the recommendation of the practice of minimally invasive dentistry, the treatment of choice for a fractured or decayed restoration will not always be the complete replacement of the restoration but its repair. One of the steps in the repair procedure is the surface treatment to be done in the poor restoration. Due to the complete polymerization of the composite resin, the resin composite needs a surface treatment so that new portions of resin can be added and have adequate strength and adhesion to remain in the oral cavity. Various surface treatments can be used, showing different results in the mechanical properties of the restoration after repair. This systematic review seeks to assess the adhesive strength of the different surface preparation techniques used in the repair of composite resin restorations. A systematic review of in vitro studies will be carried out. A search strategy on the subject will be outlined in the databases: MEDLINE via PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Brazilian Library in Dentistry (BBO), EMBASE, and LILACS. Manual searches will also be performed. The analysis and data collection will be conducted by two independent reviewers who will select the potential studies first by title and abstract. Later, they will be qualified according to the risk of bias analysis. A narrative synthesis will be carried out based on the data obtained. After data extraction, the heterogeneity of the data will be analyzed and, if possible, a network meta-analysis will be performed.
